From dresses to shoes, the latest fashion pieces are blooming all over with floral prints from dark and gloomy to feminine and flirty. It is a delightful garden of fashion’s ongoing love affair and everyone from the biggest supermodels to the strangers you see on the street are rocking them. But there is no doubt that floral pieces are not always easy to pull off with designs ranging from the big and bold, dainty and delicate to the soft pastel tones and rich vibrant hues with each displaying its own personality and character. Whether they are the focal point on a dress or splashed all over, they are the romantic staples of the moment.
Floral trends are about having fun with fashion and embracing the joy and pop of colors it brings perhaps this explains why the floral trend just won’t go away. So be prepared to embrace the splash of colors with your floral prints and everything in between. However, floral prints can be a handful to pull off from being too busy to being just another regular piece but before you take a stroll down the garden path, there are a few things to put into consideration like your body type, the areas you would like to flaunt or hide. No matter your style needs here are ways you can style up your floral pieces and all you should know.
HOW TO WEAR FLORALS
Pair a Floral with a Plain
Do you love a floral shirt and floral skirt paired together? Well, they might be a little too much if not appropriately matched. Mixing floral prints is for the bold fashionistas out there who are bold and brave about achieving an edgy and chic look and this choice is bound to make heads turn and definitely make a fashion statement. To mix and match prints, the prints should be of a similar size so that when they are matched together, it doesn’t jar the eyes. And, find prints in complementary colors such as green, red, blue, orange and yellow or purple because these colors were born to go together. However, the key to wearing floral pieces is to wear it with a plain solid color, preferably in complementary or coordinating tones. Since floral pieces come in multiple colors any color in the print is enough to give you an endless styling possibility. When you’re ready for the garden party, wear floral prints as a highlight choosing one piece only or you can mix and match different pieces if you’re bold enough to make a statement.
Stay Neutral when in Doubt
It is impossible for a floral print to not look good with a solid neutral color such as black, white, grey, beige etc. which are styling options when you don’t have to wear a lot of colors particularly those found in the actual floral print. It is also a safe way of styling with floral pieces when you are not quite sure of what to wear.
Keep it Unpredictable
If you think floral pieces look too girly, then it is time to give it a modern edge and toughen it up. You can throw on a leather or denim jacket over your floral piece. The mix of masculine and feminine touches is incredibly alluring when worn with floral prints.
Mind your accessories
Keeping your overall look balanced is key and less is truly more. Do not overdo your accessory game and like any statement making outfit, remember the KISS mantra – “Keep it simple stupid” which I prefer to say – keep it stupid simple. If you are wearing eye-popping prints, your accessories should be neutral and let the print do the talking. Choose just one fabulous pair of earrings, a chunky cuff or a statement necklace and never all three. And don’t even think of using small, dainty jewelries which will only be swallowed up by the busy florals. Other accessories like bags, scarves, shoes and hats can add major colors as well but always remember to choose them in plain colors.
Mix Prints with Pattern
As earlier mentioned if you would want to take a walk on the wild and bold side to mix up prints and patterns, then one print should be smaller than the other and should be in the same or similar color family. To have fun with mixing and matching prints, mix with like-toned or monochrome graphic prints such as stripes or spots.
Scale it to Flatter
Large prints give the impression of a greater surface area therefore, the smaller the print, the smaller the frame appears so, if you are of generous proportions and want to appear smaller, go with smaller patterns and vice versa after all nobody really wants to appear larger anyways. Choose floral pieces with prints that are no larger than your hand span; anything between 3-5 inch per print. The basic rules of thumb for determining the floral pieces to choose for your body shapes are:
- Avoiding oversized prints if you are full figured as they will make you appear even bigger.
- Small floral prints works for everyone.
- Medium floral print will work for thin people, some pear shape, hourglass and athletic figures depending on the area you wish to flaunt.
- Use larger prints where you want to make things seem larger.
- Use smaller prints when you want to appear smaller.
- A plain-colored jacket will be slimming over a floral dress while a bright colored pant or skinny jeans will be slimming under a floral top. Play with proportions and see what works best for you. Remember patterns will call attention to where it is placed so put that print to work and use it to direct attention where you want it, and away from where you don’t. Don’t like your thighs but you want to try out white pants? You can wear them with a floral print top and it will divert attention from your bottom half. Also, if you have a large stomach you can wear a solid black top with some floral print pants to divert attention from your top half. This is called the floral shuffle and it can work to your advantage if you do it right.
Floral pieces are not seasonal they are a year-round print and the key for styling like with any other print is to choose the styles and colors that are season appropriate. Just because you can’t grow flowers all year round in your garden doesn’t mean you cannot incorporate flowers in your wardrobe.
